Buying Guide
- Height and seating comfort: For bigger users, prioritize toilets with a true comfort height (around 17 inches or more from floor to seat) and an elongated bowl for a wider seating area. ADA-compliant models typically meet these criteria and reduce strain when sitting down or standing up.
- Weight capacity and durability: Look for toilets rated to support at least 350–400 lbs to ensure long-term reliability. One-piece designs can offer a stronger, easier-to-clean surface, while two-piece models may provide simpler replacement parts if needed.
- Toilet type and flush performance: Dual-flush systems offer water savings without compromising flush strength. Consider siphon-jet or pressure-assisted flushing if maximum performance is a priority in households with frequent use or higher waste loads.
- Bowl width and seating area: A wider seating area or bulkier seat can improve comfort for larger users. Elongated bowls generally provide more room and reduce pressure on the hips and thighs.
- Installation and space: Measure rough-in distance and available floor space before purchasing. Some models are easier to install for DIY upgrades, while others may require professional installation. Check clearance around the tank and under the bowl for leg space and cleaning accessibility.
- Maintenance and cleaning: Smooth-surfaces, minimal crevices, and a one-piece design simplify cleaning. Quick-release seats and accessible exterior surfaces reduce maintenance time between cleanings.
- Accessibility features: Night-time safety accessories like motion-activated toilets lights can reduce falls. Accessories such as portable caddies and shower organizers add convenience, especially in shared bathrooms or small spaces.
- Accessories and add-ons: Novelty items, while fun, should be chosen for mood and decor rather than function. Prioritize essential features (height, capacity, tidiness) for daily use, and reserve novelty products for decorative or gift purposes.
- Budget and warranty: Compare warranties, installation requirements, and long-term costs (toilet seat replacements, seals, and hoses). A solid warranty is a good indicator of product durability and manufacturer support.
